STAGE 1 - The Idea
The idea for the project began with a class discussion regarding recycling. Many of the children were quite aware of the possibilities for recycling the more obvious waste products at school - aluminium cans, paper, plastics. One of the major waste products of the school was food waste from children's lunches.
Initial trials of worm farming and composting showed several flaws with these solutions. Compost bins and worm farms teemed with other decomposers unable to cope with such large quantities of waste. The smell from the composting materials became overpowering for the nearby classrooms as the mix of carbon matter had not been adjusted correctly.
The solution - some domestic animals are used to consume these waste products. Pigs were definitely out. Chickens were a more manageable proposition
