Plants Found in our Rainforest

Black Bean

The black bean tree has a seed that is a reliable source of food that the Aborigines used to eat but only after they remove the toxic sap by soaking, leaching and roasting them. Then they eat them. The black bean grows from 15 to 20 Metres high.

Crows Nests

Crows Nests grow high on trees. They are epiphytes, meaning they will not harm their host. They fill with water and animals rest in them and drink from them.

Stinging Trees

Their leaves are covered with tiny hairs made from silica. If you touch the leaves the hairs pierce the skin and empty its acid-filled contents into your skin. You will feel intense stinging and throbbing.

Walking Stick Palm

Long strings of fruit are produced each autumn by this elegant palm. The stem has been used for a strong, flexible walking stick with a decorative hand grip from the root crown. This rare palm is native to our area.

Cunjevoi

The cunjevoi is a poisonous plant with inedible, reddish fruits. It can be found in wet drained areas in the rainforest.
