Ten Shillings |
For the first few years after Federation Australia persisted with it's existing currency. It was not until 1908 that the Treasurer announced his intention of initiating the coinage of silver in the not to distant future. It was not, however, national pride that gave rise to Autralia's first national coinage. |

One Shilling |
Our founding fathers knew full well that big profits were to be made by using cheap sliver to mint coins. By 1910, Australia's minting history was already sixty years old. Coins produced before 1910, however, were not really Australian Coins. All three Australian Mints were simply branches under the direct control of the Royal Mint in London. |

Five Pounds |
Nine years after the historic 1901 federation, four silver issues marked the the first distinctive coins of the Commonwealth of Australia. As none of the Australian Mints were adequately equipt to produce the coins they had to be struck in London. The Australian coat of arms was on the reverse of the coins with 'Advance Australia' written on a scroll at the feet of a kangaroo and emu supporting the shield containing the State emblems. |

One Florin |
Australia was actually one of the first countries in the world to to use a paper denomination of Ten Shillings, being introduced in 1913. England didn't issue one until 1928. Initially the note met with protest from the Australian upper classes who were worried that a note handled by lower classes may transmit disease.
