Suggested Activities - Year 4 
Focus KLA's Possible Activities
SOSE, HPE Unit: Down Under on Top - (a) a class computer presentation on why Australia is the best place to live - geographical features, varied cultures, lifestyle... (b) a simple database of places in Australia (c) email a partner school elsewhere in Australia to exchange stories and 'what's good about living here' reports. (d) develop a small class web site on the local area so the partner school can see photos and information. - perhaps a collaborated site/pair of sites comparing the  two locations.
SOSE  Unit: Local Area Tour Guide - (a) a collection of posters as digital photos and short pieces of writing which characterise/present the essence of the local community and what people would like to see. This may be presented as a 'trail' (continuous wall display). (b) a class concept map of the features of the area, categorised in detail (c) produce a published card inviting people to visit a place in the local area which may be displayed in a tourist information centre.
HPE, Science  Unit: All Systems Go! - (a) a teacher directed concept map/brainstorming activity on the systems which make up the body and how they interrelate. (b) students develop a small slide show about a body system to present to their peers. (c) students access materials from CD ROM to support their learning and development of presentation.
Science, English, Technology Unit: Digging up the Dinosaurs! - (a) students study via simple web quest the Australian locations where dinosaur remains have been unearthed and produce a simple report on one of the locations or dinosaurs, with the inclusion of a photo or clip art. (b) a design of the perfect dinosaur for Australian conditions of today - model in clay photographed and added as a digital photo to a short writing piece explaining the design of the dinosaur. (c) a short writing piece - 'DinoStory' - a creative piece on a 'what if' (eg group of dinosaurs survived the mass extinction)  (d) students design, create and publish a big picture book for younger children which incorporates paper engineering (pop up, flaps or movable pictures).
Science, SOSE, Technology Unit: Planting our Community - (a) a published information system of native plants which are suited to the local conditions including growth, planting guides etc...may be a series of cards which might be for display/public use including pictures. (b) publish posters to support a special nursery day at the school where plants are sold and money raised for the school. (c)  prepare short written pieces on the medicinal value of certain native plants suited to the area. 
Science, SOSE, HPE Unit: The Wild, Wild Wetlands - (a) a digital camera study of local wetland area, with a narrated description presented to the local community/school by computer slideshow. (b) a written study on the value of the wetlands even though they may appear unattractive to the eye (c) a concept map produced on computer - all the life that exists in wetland areas, the threats of close proximity of human settlement (d) a class published proposed management plan for the wetland areas, with a brochure to raise public awareness. (e) published short fiction/poetry - theme: 'I am a wet land creature - this is how I feel today' (f) email communication with an expert in the community for questions and support
