SOSE, English, The Arts Unit: The 'Watery' Frontier - (a) a web quest into explorers of the past and their voyages of discovery across oceans (b) a computer presentation on the journey of an explorer including picture and map (c) with a paint program, draw the journey of the explorer over a blank map and label important points (d) a fictitious diary entry of an important day in the life of an explorer (e) write and perform a seafaring song which might be sung on a journey to pass the time and keep spirits up. (collection of these published in a book)
SOSE Unit: Continent Hopping - (a) a computer presentation/storybook (group activity) of an Australian Kangaroo who hops across oceans and travels to other countries - what it encounters in geographical features and other animals - how other animals react to it etc.. (b) d
Science, HPE Unit: Evolution Revolution - (a) posters published featuring 'alternative evolution' - a reinventing of Australian Animals as they might have been if Australia was connected to South Africa or South America (no separation of continents) (b) students draw/design animals by editing existing pictures/combining features from different animals. (c) a web page (part of a class web) of individual creatures and the features which make them unique.
Science, SOSE, HPE, Technology Unit: Energy for Life - (a) access to web sites to learn of energy sources to support the way we live. (b) a short discussion paper published by students on preferred options they would like to see in energy uses for the future. (c) a class letter to local parliamentarians inquiring about the long term plans for the provision of energy to households and any incentives for change to renewable/ environmentally friendly energy sources. (d) published posters or brochures on different energy sources. (e) a simple spreadsheet survey/graph of class households on energy use patterns - eg lights at night/TV for how long over one week.
SOSE, HPE, Technology Unit: A Day in the Life - Pre Settlement - (a) access to web sites and CD ROM resources regarding the settlement of Australia - collection of notes and images with attention to source and copyright issues - a challenge to put together the issues related to pre-settlement and what daily life was like in Australia prior to settlement. (b) a written proposal - contrast on culture - how would they survive  in Australia pre-settlement without the things they take for granted today? (c) modernising the dreamtime - adaptation of a dreamtime story to electronic story book with a slide show and painting program. (d) taking digital photos of local locations, looking at historic pictures of these locations and doing computer drawings on what the land may have looked like in pre-settlement times
SOSE, Technology, HPE, Science Unit: Early Explorers from the Future - (a) a study of web materials to choose an early Australian explorer, and a published brief report on their journey by slideshow. (b) a computer produced concept map of all the issues/difficulties faced by early explorers. (c) a published proposal, 'what if' the explorer could have travelled in time to the present day, to take back a small number of items to help them on their journey - what would they choose and how would the items change the journey? (d) modified slide show according to above on how the journey would be (how long, where etc...) (e) A written plan for their own exploration in early days, taking on the role of an early explorer with the advantage of knowing what we know today.
