Insect, raised at Narangba Valley State High School - quite a scary
thing to have on your arm! |

Left: The containers where the stick insect
eggs are hatched, at Narangba Valley SHS, Murrumba District. |
|

|
Left: When the stick insects, hatch, they
are added to a special breeding box - these are shown at left. The conditions
must be right for these small insects to survive when being raised this
way. You will note there are eucalypt leaves and water in the
containers. See photo below for a close up of the juvenile stick
insects. |
|

|
Left: A close up to allow you to see the
stick insects on the inside of the mesh. There are no apparent
differences as yet in the hatching or growth of stick insects from eggs
that went to space when compared to the control sample of eggs which
stayed on earth. |

Left: The teachers of Deception Bay SHS,
Beachmere SS, Dakabin SHS, Kurwongbah SS, Narangba SS, Narangba Valley
SHS meet at Deception Bay High School to pack
their experiments in vials, ready for sealing by customs and sending to
the USA. |
|

|
Left: Some of the vials - packed and
ready for sending away. Behind is the experiment write-up from Narangba
State School.
It was necessary to receive a permit from
the USA for each type of sample: Plants/seeds, soil and insect eggs so
that they could be imported.
For Australia, permits are also
needed to export and return some of the items. For expedience and
to avoid delays, the samples were sealed by customs. |
