On the pages at the web site to support this project I have repeatedly stressed the point that for associations to be able to use the Net for meetings, a software client must be available for all common platforms (Mac, Win95 and Win 3.x). This is the main problem in all areas of synchronous communications except for the IRC environment....until now......

ICQ has been around for a year (Nov '96 it started) and now has clients for Mac, 3.x and Win 95. Download it to get started. It is a great space to investigate because it is:
  1. easy to install and be up and running
  2. easy to learn how to add new users to your contacts list
  3. easy to provide help and support for
  4. the simplest way to firstly, know if someone is online right now and then, make contact with immediately for synchronous communication for chat, URL transfer, file transfer.

Get ICQ on to your computer. [ Top ]
Download ICQ from http://www.mirabilis.com. I recommend that you choose the Require My Authorisation during installation option so that when users ask to add you to their list of contacts, you will get a message to authorise them first. That way you will avoid automatic acceptance of requests from people you don't know.

ICQ will install so that it will start each time you go online.

Add users to your contact list [ Top ]
Your first job will be to add people to your contact list (see image above). Click Add Users and search for each other by email or name and add them to the contact list. Add your professional colleagues first. That way you can build up a list for professional purposes and be up and running quite quickly.

The most important thing to do now is play for a while and get used to the space. You can ask me to join you if you like. I can walk you through the features of the environment. You can search for me using my email address: david@thenetride.com.au.

As at October 29th, 1997, the versions of ICQ available for the Mac platform are labelled "Preview". We have found that the CHAT facility is NOT available in this "preview" version.
