Pastoral care

OLGC is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for each child in our care. There are a range of policies and programs in place to ensure that this aim is achieved. These include:

• The OLGC Pastoral Care Policy.
• The OLGC Anti-bullying Policy.
• The Friendly Schools, Friendly Families Program – Kindergarten to Year Six (A program designed to develop resilience and to sustain a climate of care and support).
Student Leadership Programs including Peer Support and Buddy Program in which senior students are specifically trained to create positive relationships with younger students.
Seasons for Growth Program – runs term two and three for children who are experiencing loss through death, separation or divorce. This is not a counselling course but a support group run by a trained facilitator.
• Access to a School Counsellor.
Student Management Guidelines are provided to each teacher to ensure a consistent approach to classroom management and the handling of disciplinary matters.

Restorative Justice (RJ)
OLGC staff has received training in the principles of Restorative Justice for primary students. RJ is a philosophy. At its heart is the importance of creating positive relationships. RJ is based on accepting responsibility for one’s actions; understanding that things sometimes go wrong but that we are responsible for making them right again; treating ourselves and others with respect.

RJ is based on the sound Christian principles of action, forgiveness and relationship building. At OLGC our system for dealing with behaviour and discipline issues is based on this philosophy.
