Elimbah, Australia

Elimbah is the home of Project Atmosphere Australia Online. Many of the weather and cloud photos you will see at this site were taken in or around Elimbah. Elimbah is situated just north of Caboolture in Queensland, Australia. The area is centred upon a small township and characterised by native and plantation timber forests, rural residential acreages and agriculture. There is one small school, Elimbah State School, situated in the town.

The morning sun pierces the fog - what a 'warming' sight at a time like this! Beautiful sunrises are the order of the day in Elimbah, their arrival over the Pacific Ocean to the east heralded by the large and varied population of native birds which inhabit the area. They are out early, feeding and venturing where the day will take them. Morning fogs are common in the forests and around creeks, dams and low lying areas in the cooler months.

Right: sunrise in the fields around Elimbah on a chilly winter morning`- the air is brisk, fresh - the grass wet and cold on your feet. It feels great to be alive!

Sunsets to die for! Take a look through the gallery at this site. Sunsets are also stunning, over the D'aguilar Ranges to the west of Elimbah. The colours of the sunset are influenced by the variety of cloud types which drift above the hills at several different levels, bringing about spectacular effects such as those at left. Prevailing winds in the area are generally north-easterly or south-easterly, with a strong sea-breeze influence. The coastal communities of Toorbul, Donnybrook, Bribie Is. and Beachmere are a short distance away. Right: Sunset over the D'aguilar Ranges. To see more sunsets, visit the Elimbah Sunsets Media Gallery.

Looks scary! Secure all outside items and get inside quickly! The area is subject to regular rainfall throughout most of the year, and thunderstorms which can be quite severe in nature. The majority of severe storm activity such as that at left originates in the south-west and moves north-east across the district. Strong, gusting winds and heavy rain are common. Hailstones occur infrequently and are generally not very damaging.

The picture at right shows the approach of a`cumulonimbus 'shelf' cloud which is typical of the arrival of a severe storm over the residential areas during the summer months. See the Elimbah Storms Media gallery for more severe weather photos and panoramas of the local area.

Elimbah Railway Station The main railway line north from Brisbane bisects the community and provides a valuable transport facility for agricultural produce. Passenger and freight trains between Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland and the major regional centres to the north travel through the community along this line.

Pictured at left: the produce loading depot alongside the railway line at Elimbah Station. Note the carriages stacked with crates that carry fresh pineapples away for processing.

Hale-Bopp comet over Elimbah, 1997 At right: A treat for those with an interest in astronomy. This is a photo of the Hale-Bopp Comet taken over the Glasshouse Mountains, (volcanic plugs) just north of Elimbah in 1997. The photo was taken from Wildhorse Mountain Lookout. It has been 'dressed up' for this web page to show the comet more clearly. Many, many thanks to the Lloyd family of Brisbane for the use of this photo.

Below: A treat for those with an interest in geology/landforms - the Glasshouse Mountains as seen from the air, looking toward the west. Elimbah is to the south. These mountains are famous Australian landmarks and seem to be a magnet for rainy weather!

What a sight and a great day for flying! This photo was taken on a beautiful, clear day over the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
