Folsom GATOROBYTES

We are the Folsom GATOROBYTES - a neighborhood FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics team. We live in Folsom, a city near the Capital of California, Sacramento. Our team has 10 kids, 3 girls and 7 boys, from 4 different schools. Our grade-levels go from 5th grade to 9th grade. We primarily build robots and compete and as part of the competition, we also do a project. This year we focused on Water Conservation.

Recently, we won the Champion's Award at the 2009 Climate Connections Northern California FLL Championship tournament and we will be representing California as well as the United States in the European Open Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark May 2009.

California is facing the most significant water crisis in its history. Our Folsom Lake is at a record low-level and the City of Folsom has declared a Stage 2 Water Alert. Folsom uses about 30,000 acre feet of water every year. We are spreading the word on wate rconservation. Every drop counts when we fight to conserve this precious resource. Some simple ways we can save water include:

1.       Turn off the water while you brush your teeth.

2.       Take a shorter shower, like less than 5 minutes. You can save 1000 gallons a month.

3.       Turn off water while soaping or shampooing.

4.       Do not over water your plants.

5.       Run only a full dish washer.

6.       Wash clothes only when there is a full load.

7.       Fix all water leaks. If there are 10 drips per minute, you waste 43 gallons a month or about 526 gallons in a year.

8.       Install covers on your pool and spa. You can reduce evaporation.

9.       Did you know that toilets use the most water in a home? Newer toilets save water!

10.   Use a broom to sweep the driveways instead of using a water hose.

Can you please share with us how you conserve water?

· Project Atmosphere Australia Online - Climate, Weather Agriculture Online Booklet
A fantastic resource most suitable for secondary schools about the impact of climate variability on agricultural practices in Australia. The lesson here is to use the land more sustainably and be prepared for the extremes of climate. Thanks to David George of the DPI for the use of such a great resource at this site.
