The Music Program

PREPRIMARY, YEAR ONE, TWO AND THREE

In the junior years (pre-primary, one, two three), much of the children's musical development takes place as they listen, create and respond to music, and through their participation in musical song games.
Percussion activities in ensemble situations introduce students to correct playing techniques, care of instruments, the decoding of musical symbols, the reading of music and ensemble playing.

YEAR FOUR AND FIVE

The year four music program is a continuation of the learning of reading and writing music from year three. Students at this stage have a strong grasp of the rhythmic component of music reading and writing. In year four students are introduced to melody writing concentrating on songs known from year one.

The introduction of the solfa scale leads students into  singing, reading and playing melodic patterns using voice and tuned percussion.

Soundscapes, creating melodies using text from poems, and, bands are introduced during this year.

The foundations of music reading and writing established in year four are further developed in year five as students apply and extend their music knowledge  using the recorder as their main instrument.

YEAR SIX AND SEVEN

The year six program utilises the student's previous knoweldge of reading, writing, creating and responding to music.
During this year the students are introduced to playing the keyboard.  Using their keyboard skills students form bands and use their skills from previous years to arrange set pieces of music.

The band program is continued into year seven with students using their own compositions as the basis of their arrangements.

1998 saw the first recording of student composed and arranged music onto hard drive. With the introduction of technology it is hoped that the motivation for students to compose will come from classroom or technology based projects using 'Hyperstudio'.
