Week 5

Introduction

Wagga's Diary
This week there was lots of information on Wagga's diary on the Internet about food and dancing. Wagga sent us a video, a CD and a boomerang! See Wagga dancing!

Gifts from Kuranda!

The video was of dreaming stories created illustrated and told by indigenous people. This included girls from Kuranda doing a cassowary dance. Our girls then had a go too but not dressed up and painted like traditional dancers. We also received a CD with two little movie clips on it. One was of an indigenous man holding Wagga and demonstrating the 'shake-a-leg' dance! The other movie was indigenous boys showing us this dance too. Clips from these movies are shown here. Our boys found it much harder to do than it looked!

After the children had a try with dancing they inserted their school photo into 'KidPix Deluxe 3' and the painted it. The rest of the screen was decorated with types of dot painting.

We then shared this by putting some of these images on Wagga's diary on the Internet. We also told the children in Kuranda about the indigenous children visiting us for a week from Maree.

Artist in Residence

At this time we also had an artist in residence at school visiting us for 4 weeks. Yvonne is an indigenous fibre artist who weaves reeds into all sorts of things. Some of the children are weaving some reeds together and then Yvonne is adding their work to a big mat she is making.
