FUNCTION
How does the pollutants get into our water system?
The main sources of these pollutants are....
Illegal dumping of waste oils (such as petrol etc...)
Working on cars and machinery outside and in uncovered areas e.g. Fixing an oil leak on the drivway where the oil can easily go down your drain.
Primarily soil particles and saw dust from poor building and construction sites.
also nutrients occur naturally in the water, but increased amounts of nutrients in urban waterways are caused by excessive fertiliser usage, road runoff and sewage outfalls.
Runoff from roadways and carparks (tyre wear etc.)
Leaded petrol (car emissions)
Corrosion of roofing, surfaces and pipes
Industrial operations.
Leaves, grass clippings, animal faeces, foods and some chemicals. As these substances break down and decay, they can decrease the amount of oxygen available in the water. People throw drink containers, cigarette butts, plastic bags and plastic wrappings away all the time. These mainly come from roads and gutters from littering, dumping or poor bin management e.g. rubbish falling out of the bins.
