Totems

The children were each given a totem, which was an Australian animal (with both the English and Aboriginal names of this creature). They were know by this name during the term. If the child's creature was a mammal, the children investigated their relationship with the other animal groups, such as which groups would be their natural enemies and which group they could live with in harmony. They were asked to trace their hand onto a piece of coloured cardboard, write both the English and Aboriginal name onto the hand and draw their animal. They then added their own designs to their hands and stuck these onto black cardboard.

The children discussed symbolism in great detail
and talked about the movements of their Totem animals.
The children after much planning designed a dot drawing
to symbolise and tell a story about their animal.

These examples are by Jan-ai, Cherie and Mary.
