Barn-Barn Barlala, The Bush Trickster

"I wish that the barra-barra (wild mistletoe berry's) would hurry up and ripen" said a girl.

" I really like them!"

"They will be ready soon!" said the boy.

"Gabarli (grandmother) says that they are nearly ripe now. "

The next day, the girl saw that emus were picking at the berries.

''Hurry!! The emus are eating our berries!!" They ran towards the tree and chased the emus away. "I hope they haven't eaten all of them!!"

They climbed up the tree and one said "No, there are lots up in the top where the sun can hit them".

As the children started to climb the trees, the birds watched and kept still. They didn't like them eating their fruit.

''What can we do?'' asked one of the emus.

''What can we do to frighten the children away?'' they asked each other.

''I know what to do!'' Said Barn-Barn Barla. She flew off to hide behind the tree the children were at. She started to make spooky noises, the children's mum's warned DON'T FOLLOW BARN-BARN BARLA!!'' ''Run!!!!'' cried all the children.

''I'm not going to go!'' Said a girl.

''Well, it's only a stupid bird'' she said. ''WHAAAAAT!!'' said the rest of the children. She heard the call once more and followed it. Soon it began to get dark.

''I'm going to sleep right here, right now!'' Soon she fell asleep. In the morning she followed her tracks back home.  Her mother scolded her for disobeying her warning.
