Gidja and Yalma

In the dreaming there was a moon man called Gidja. He loved Yalma the evening star so much he wanted to marry her, but the evening star just laughed at him, because he was so round, and ran away. So he decided to make some magic music to make her love him. Every night he sang to her and one day she decided to marry him.

They had a baby called 'Morning Star'. One day while he was cutting wood a branch fell on her and she died. This made the people angry because they thought they were immortal. The people threw spears at Gidja, he ran away across a river but the men cut the rope and he fell into the water.

He swam and he caught a hold of a piece of grass and pulled himself on to the bank. It was growing dark so he lit a fire and wandered along the bank. Soon he came to the camp. The people saw him and grabbed their spears, they threw their spears at him but they bounced off him and he laughed wickedly. He said, " You can't kill me!"

Then they got their strongest men and they threw him into the sky and he said "I will die but I will come back to life again as a full moon''. To this day we see Gidja in our night sky. Not far away is his wife 'Yalma' the Evening star. Gidja lights up the sky for all the world.
