Determining Valid Sites

After going through the activities below
go back to each website you've pasted into 'Word',
insert a comment as to why you think it is a valid site.

On the right is part of a search result from "Looksmart".

How could you determine whether or not the creator of these sites is an authority on their subject? In other words, can you believe what they are saying? Is it likely to be biased?

The heading MAY help but not in these case.

The blurb may indicate the author's age range, level of sophistication, involvement with places in authority like a University or government organization.

The web address is the best indicator from the search results. Can you identify the 3 letters which tend to tell us what sort of organization is hosting this site? What do these stand for: com, net, gov, edu? Can you find others in your own searches? How would you use this knowledge to help in deciding whether this is likely to be a VALID SITE? How can you tell what country this website might be from?

The actual web pages themselves, when you access the site, can also help indicate the authority of the creator.
How sophisticated is the design?
How sophisticated and accurate is the language used?
Are there indicators of connections with official organizations?
