Year 4 have been researching Early Wollongong and have written stories about a day in the life of a 10 year old in those days ...
Jamie in the 1850's
One day I woke up and got out of my wooden bed. That morning mum said I had to get some
water because it was a hot day and all our water has gone and we might dehydrate. So that morning I took the bucket and got some water .
Then, when I was walking home, Governor Macquarie came up to me and said , "What are you doing outside with no adults, there are convicts everywhere? They could just come and pick you up and take you away.''
''Sorry Governor Macquarie.'' I said. "It's just we had run out of water and it's very hot so we might dehydrate.''
So Governor Macquarie walked me home and told my Mum to be a bit more careful where I go without an adult.
"Because, like I said to your child. They can just pick her up when your not looking. They are very sneaky." he said.
"I know '' said Mum.
"Well I better leave you two alone.'' Mum said bye and so did I.
That night I said to Mum ''Governor Macquarie is very nice.'' Then I said good night and went to bed.
That night I heard some people outside my bedroom window. I had a look and it was Governor Macquarie and some convicts dancing. I giggled to myself.

A DAY IN 1800 'S
It was morning and I got up and thought work, work and more WORK!!! I went down stairs
to see what WORK I had to do today. "Hey Patrick will you go get some cedar for Governor Hunter " said mum. "Ahu," I said dreamily . Then I noticed she said Hunter. "WHAT Hunter's
coming down to Illawarra !" "Sure is ," said mum. "Ok, I definitely will" I said gob smacked and I went outside to get the cedar.
On my way I saw my best friend Arthur "Hi "I said to him.
"Hi". He said back. "Guess who I'm getting cedar for?" I said happily. "Your mum" he snorted. "Nope," I said laughing. "GOVERNER HUNTER!" I screamed.
" HOLY MACKEREL !" he screamed. "Can I come ?" "Well you can if you help collect the cedar." "Ok ok ok okaaaa" with a bit of anger in his voice. "Let's go!" I shouted.
We didn't talk much on the way , partly because we were VERY excited about John Hunter coming down to Illawarra. Then I heard Arthur scream "AHHHHHHHHH! He screamed again
"ABORIGINES!" he screamed " they threw two spears over my head! he shouted , then I screamed too. "They have surrounded us!"
"NOOOOO, they will kill us" boomed Arthur. The aborigines started talking around us " We need cedar" I said slowly I think the understood what I said because they started running off into the bush
"Let's follow them, "said Arthur, but I was already running ahead of him "Wait for meee!" shouted Arthur.
When the aborigines stopped running they were standing in a forest of cedar wood! Me and
Arthur started picking up heaps of cedar wood . Then the aborigines surrounded us again! "oh oh" I said quietly. Then I chucked the cedar over their heads did a handstand flip so did Arthur
except he landed on his head ! "Great one" he said "practice" I said . Come and catch us Muggles" I shouted over my shoulder "yeah come and catch us muggleys shouted Arthur
"Muggles" I said "oh well" he screamed at me .
We started running through the bush at top speed " This way!" I shouted. "No this way" he argued back
"Ok then I'll GO THAT WAY" I screamed at him. "Temper, temper." he mumbled. When we were close to getting out of the bush, I looked back - one of the aborigines was going
to throw a spear at Arthur! "NOOOOO I screamed. I dived at him. I knocked him to the ground "Thanks, you saved my life!" he exclaimed.
"Don't worry " I said. When we started running I thought if we get outta here safely, those aborigines won't be able to get us because there are armed soldiers walking around. I made a
desperate sprint for the daylight so did Arthur we made it out!
When I got home I gave the cedar to Governor Hunter "Thank you boys" he said kindly.
That night when I was going to bed I thought this was the best day of my life.

My Life in 1850
My name is Virginia I live in a town called Sydney. In my days there are lovely Horizons. We
travel to the sea though these on horse back, buggies and horse and cart and to see grand sunsets.
We have lovely rainforests where many creatures live and strange birds sing. Our house is made
out of mud or wood or bark and straw. We endure many hardships such as bushfires. We have big hilltops but no high Mountains as there are in England.
We live on a farm and work HARD to make a living. We wake up at dawn to start our chores were to collect the eggs, milk the cows, feed the chickens and the horses, and pigs before we go
to school. My elder brother would cut the wood for the fireplace which we used for warmth in winter and to cook our food. At night we would see by candles or oil lamps. My mother made
soap and candles. And we were lucky to have windmills to grind the wheat to make flour. We have water tanks to collect water for our needs. Our furniture was made out of wood by my
father and brothers. My mother taught me how to play the piano and it is a good form of amusement for me. I play knuckles with my sister. We use them with chicken bones and I have a
lovely doll. I have a small amount of clothing and my mother expects me to care for them as my sister did when she wore them. My skirts are very long. My father's Sunday clothes were a
brimmed hat, long shorts and coat tails. My father hunts for some of our food and we grow some vegetables. It is very hot in summer so we swim in the billabong. We have a few roads and those are made out of dirt.

MY DAY IN 1850
Dad I'm back from milking the cow, OK son now go dig another hole for the toilet O..............k! dad ''good boy Matt''. Oh hi I'm Matthew , Matt for short. I HATE the work
dad tells me to do. But the fun part about it I don't have to work on Saturday or Sunday , Mum and dad have to work all day and get to swim in the water hole and play with Tommy my dog.
The thing I really HATE is when I have too go to the harbour because they found out how to sail across Wollongong to Melbourne, or something. Some of the convicts are nice but some still
want to steal. When my family goes home we walk across the harbour and see the good sites.
For dinner mum puts the pot over the open fire and we have carrot soup because no one likes it, we some times have pumpkin, chicken or tomato soup. For breakfast we have strawberries off
the bush down the road we also have bacon off the pigs. I hate bed time because as soon as the sun goes down Have to go to bed, and the beds are
YUK my bed is made of sheep's wool with a cover over the top. It is pretty comfortable, '' OH the sun is down ...............
GOODNIGHT
