Skills across all stages in the Primary School

These skills are not to be seen as a Scope and Sequence but rather a suggested list of some of the skills developed in the Primary school which will enable all students to make an informed decision when choosing the correct tool to complete a task.

Recognise computer terminology - start up, shut down, monitor, keyboard, mouse, cursor, window. menu bar.

Access a school network and be aware of the need for password security.

Take responsibility for maintaining a personal folder on a server, opening, saving and deleting files.

Trouble shoot basic problems, assist with basic maintenance and tutor peers.

Use icons on the Launcher/ At Ease / Desktop to open programs.

Use menus to open a file, run / quit software and other options as needed.

Use pull-down menus to use all options and help menus.

Use help menus and tutorials to gain access to information.
Locate a file using the search facility.

Use pictorial clues in menus to quit, print and select other options as needed.

Save work to correct place eg disk, folder on a server and retrieve saved work.

Select printer and change printing options.

Change preferences e.g. default folder for saving, page setup.

Use special keys - shift, spacebar, option and control.

Recognise the purpose and use of specific keys - caps lock, return/enter, arrow keys, delete/ backspace.

Use special keys as required by program. Know the purpose and use of specific keys e.g. tab, option, command.

Use special key combinations for specific purposes eg capture screen shots.

Use the mouse as a drawing tool and to select, drag and move the cursor.
Use a combination of mouse and keys for special purposes.

Scroll through documents and dialogue boxes.
Use arrow keys to move the cursor in a document.

Compare the use of keyboard short cuts with pull-down menus.

 

Use keyboard commands for trouble shooting - force quit, restart, rebuild the desktop.

Locate numbers and letters on the keyboard and recognise case.

Use two hands on the keyboard.

Use a keyboarding program to develop touch typing skills.

Use touch typing skills for all word processing tasks.

Recognise, name and use common paint / draw / graphics tools to create images.

Use the clipboard and scrapbook to store/retrieve images

Use a word processor to write simple sentences.

Use a word processor to publish stories, poems, reports etc and import graphics.

Use a links page on a schools intranet or bookmarks in a browser to access information on the Internet.

Conduct an Internet search using keywords, refining a search when necessary.

Create text and graphics to be used in web pages with teacher and/or peer support.

Create web pages adding backgrounds and images with support.

Create web pages with links to other files and use appropriate features - rules, animated gifs.

Insert anchors, tables, links to URLs, and quicktime movies (sound and movies).

Create non linear, multimedia documents.

Construct branching stories (hypertext) incorporating text, graphics, sound and animations.

Create a slide show.

Create a slide show which includes voice and sound effects.

Choose appropriate software to create slide shows. Include movies and animations.

Create slide shows and animations. Save slide shows as Quicktime movies to use in web pages.

Use a digital camera to take photos.
