Tools

The Text tool is used to write text. To create a text box in a word processing document, select the text tool and hold down the Option key while dragging diagonally to create a box. Text boxes can be resized and moved easily.

The Arrow pointer is used to select objects in a drawing document. Select the arrow pointer when inserting graphics into a word processing document or the images will be treated as in line text.

The Paint tool inserts a paint section into a word processing or drawing document.

The Spreadsheet tool inserts a spreadsheet into the word processing, drawing or painting document.

The Rectangle tool draws a rectangle or square if the shift key is held.

The Line tool draws straight lines which can be constrained to 45 degree increments if the Shift key is held down.

The Oval tool draws an oval or circle if the shift key is held.

This Rounded Rectangle tool draws a rectangle with rounded corners.

The Polygon tool draws shapes by clicking the mouse at the corners of your shapes. The shape needs to be closed.

The Arc tool draws curved lines. A circular arc can be drawn by holding down the Shift key.

The Bezigon tool draws a bezier curve. To end the drawing you need to double click.

The Freehand tool draws curved lines.

Eye dropper is used to pick up the same colour from an image, exactly.

The Regular Polygon tool draws shapes with six equal sides as the default. In a word processing or drawing document the number of sides can be changed by selecting Polygon sides from the Edit menu. In a Painting document, just double click on the polygon icon and change the number in the dialogue box.

Marquee tool selects a rectangular area on the screen.

Lasso tool either wraps around a shape if it is on a clean background or selects an area drawn by the mouse if there is colour on the background.

Pencil tool paints a line on the screen. Hold down the shift key to paint a vertical or horizontal line.

Brush tool paints a line. Double click on the icon to change the shape of the brush.

The Fill tool looks like a bucket and fills an enclosed area with the chosen colour or pattern. If the shape is not enclosed the entire screen will fill. Use Undo in the Edit menu immediately.

Magic wand. This selects items with the same colour

The Spraycan paints a pattern of dots. Double click on the icon to change the dot size and flow rate.

The Eraser removes portions of a painted area. Double click on the icon to erase the whole screen.




Fill and line palettes

The Fill palette has 3 options - a colour, a pattern or a gradient fill.
Any object that is selected can be filled with one of the 3 options.

To select a colour
Click in the first box under the paint tin to reveal the colour palette. Move the mouse to the chosen colour.
The palette can be torn off or moved to a more convenient position on the desktop. Click anywhere in the palette and drag it to a new position.

Select a pattern or gradient fill in the same way.

Note, objects can be made transparent by selecting the transparent pattern button (first buton in the Fill Pattern palette).




Pen options:

Any object that is selected can have the lines modified by selecting the colour, pattern, thickness or arrow options.

By selecting a line Width of None, an object can have the outline removed.

Arrows only work on straight lines.
