Create a Hotlist

 A hotlist is a web page (HTML document) which contains links to web sites. The list can contain instructions for students, a description of the site, or any kind of note which will help the user.

A printed list of sites, with URL"s, can also be prepared for students to use at home.

  • To create a list of suitable web sites for students, a teacher can do the initial searching (in their own time), bookmarking suitable sites for the students to use for their research.
  • When a suitable site is visited, select Add Bookmark from the Bookmark file or use the keyboard shortcut COMMAND D.
  • Teachers can add notes to assist the search or guide research.
  • Open the Bookmark file in the Netscape menu or use the keyboard shortcut COMMAND B.

  • When the Bookmark window opens, click on the name of the site (which should be the last one in the list) and select Get Info from the Edit menu or use the keyboard shortcut COMMAND I.



  • Click in the Description section of the window that opens, type in the notes which will help those who will use the final product, then click OK. The space is limited and will bip when full.

  • If you want to print the hotlist of sites showing the URL's, highlight the address in the Location box, copy it (COMMAND C) then paste it COMMAND V) into the Description box before adding the comments.



  • When your collection of bookmarked sites is complete, open the bookmark file (COMMAND B or Navigator menu. Select SAVE AS from the File menu and type in a suitable name for the file (eg Indonesia bookmarks). Click OK.
  • Quit Netscape and open the file just saved in a program that allows the creation of web pages - Claris Home Page, Netscape Communicator, etc,etc
  • Delete all unnecessary sites from the file, leaving only the names of sites which the students will be using for the research activity.
  • The notes can be edited and more information added if needed. Save the file as an HTML page (eg bm.html).

  • Make the file available for the students by copying it to a disk, a server or the school Intranet.
  • If the URL's were added in the Description box, the page can be printed (for students to take home, ).




  • To use the hotlist open Netscape (or browser of choice), then select Open Page from the File menu and open the file (eg bm.html) containing the links.

  • Have the students bookmark the file before they start browsing to enable them to return to the file easily. The Back button can also be used. Students can click on the links, following the teacher's instructions to gather information and images.
