Making Stacks of Stacks

  • Plan your stack.
  • Open HyperStudio and select NEW STACK from the menu. Follow the prompts to open a new project.
  • From the menu bar, select Tools. Hold the mouse button down on the tool menu and drag the Tool menu onto the screen. This will place the Tool menu on the desktop readily accessible during the construction of your project.

  • This section of the tool menu provides access to editing tools which have similar functions to paint software. You can use these features to create or modify backgrounds and graphics in your project.

  • Use the paint facilities to create your own background or you may use a prepared background. From the main menu, select File and select Import Background. Select Disk file and choose a background from the Resource folder or directory under Background on the CD.

Card 1 Adding text, graphics and a button

On this card you will add text as a title, a graphic and a button to move to the next page or card in the project.

  • Adding text - From the tools menu, double click on the text tool . This will allow you to select the size, font and font colour for your text. Your selections are shown in a dialogue window. Select OK when you have selected the appropriate style.
  • Move the cursor to the position on the card where you would like your project title to appear and click the mouse button once. Type the title. Note: It is not possible to edit the text once you have completed typing and pressed Return. If you do make a mistake, select Edit and Undo to undo the text.
  • Adding graphics - From the Objects menu, select Add a Graphic Object. From the next dialogue window select Disk file and then OK. Select a graphic from the appropriate Resource folder and select OK.
  • When the graphics appear, use the lasso tool and while holding down the mouse button, draw a line around the graphic needed. Select OK. This will then place your graphic on your first card.
  • You will notice the graphic has a series of dotted lines around it (marching ants). This means it is possible to move the graphic to another position on the card. Move the cursor over the graphic. Hold down the mouse button and drag the image to the desired position on the card.
  • Move the cursor away from the graphic and click the mouse button once anywhere on the card. On the next window that opens, type a name for the graphic in the name box and select OK.

  • In the Name window, type the name for the button eg. Next page.

  • Click the mouse button anywhere on the card.
  • From the next window, click in the check box Next Card. This will link the current page to the next page you create.

  • Another screen opens and asks for a Transition. This is the effect when one card moves to another card. Highlight one of the names from the list and select the Try It button.

Card 2 Text objects and sound

On this card you will be able to create a text object and the facility to play sounds or music.

  • Creating a new card. To create the next card in your stack, from the Edit menu select New Card. Add a background similar to your first card. If you need to return to the previous card, select Move from the main menu, and then Previous Card.
  • Adding a text object. Text objects are different from the text you typed on the opening card. A text object allows you to add text as a body of information, which can be edited later.
  • From the Objects menu select Add a Text Object. A flashing rectangle will appear on screen to indicate the size and position of the text object. You can move the object anywhere on the screen by clicking once inside it and while still holding down the mouse button drag it to a new position.
  • To resize the object, move the cursor over the dotted line until the cursor changes into an arrow. Hold down the mouse button. As you move the cursor, the size of the object will change.
  • Note: It is possible to change the size and position in the future if needed by selecting the edit tool and clicking once inside the object.
  • Click the mouse away from the text object, anywhere on the card to open the next window. Select a style for your text by selecting the Style button. This will allow you to change the colour, font and font size. When you have selected the features needed, select OK. Type the name of the object and select OK.
  • The cursor will be inside your text object and you will now be able to type your text directly onto the screen inside the box you have created.
  • Adding sound. Sound and music files may be combined with graphics and button objects in the presentation. For this example you can combine a sound file with a graphics object.
  • Select and place a graphic object onto the current card, following the steps outlined for Card One.
  • To add the sound, select Add a Button from the Objects menu and type a name for the button in the next window.
  • You will notice on the left-hand side a series of shapes under the heading, Type. This will allow you to choose the shape of the sound button. As we are going to add the button to a graphic the button should be transparent.

  • Select the transparent button (highlighted in the example) and then OK to create the transparent button. The button will appear on your card. Move and resize the button so it covers your graphic. When you are finished click the mouse button anywhere on the card.
  • In the new window that opens, select Play a Sound.
  • In the new window, select Disk Library. Locate and select an appropriate sound from the Resource folder. Once you have selected a sound click on the Play button to hear it. Select OK when complete, then Done to return to your card.
  • Select the browsing tool to hear the added sound.
  • To complete this card, add a button, which links to the next card. Follow the steps outlined for card one.
  • When completed, save the stack by selecting Save Stack from the File menu.
  • If you would like to change the sound, select the edit tool. Place the cursor over the button and double click the mouse button.
  • From the menu locate and select the Actions button. Select Play a Sound to remove the check box then reselect it.
