Internet Research

How do I start?

  • Organise the students into groups and ensure each group has a clearly defined goal.
  • Use information skills to list "What I know" and "What I need to know" to create a list of questions which will guide the students research.
  • Develop a bank of keywords that are related to the topic.

How can I use the net?

  • Log onto the Internet and open the web browser. (Netscape, Internet Explorer).
  • Select a search engine (Altavista, Infind, Answers, Yahoo etc) from the Bookmarks or provide an Internet address for the students to type in the location window (or select Open Location from the File menu, then type in the address)..
  • Click in the entry box and type in the keywords and press Return (or click Search / Go etc).
  • The search engine will list files that are related to the keywords. You may get a large number of returns and may need to revise your search.
  • Click on the underlined text and this will take you to the site.
  • Once at the site, navigate through it using the scroll bars evaluating the value of the information provided. If the information is needed, take notes.
  • You can also print the pages and images by selecting Print from the File menu in your browser. As web pages can be very large, the need to print should be negotiated with the teacher.
  • Once the information has been retrieved, special notice must be taken of copyright and validity of information. For further information on copyright and Internet usage refer to the document connect.edu: Internet in teaching and learning (which was issued to all NSW govt. schools) or visit the Australian Copyright web site
  • Well structured Internet teaching projects abound on the web and can be useful to introduce internet researching/ searching.
  • The On-line research projects available at Batemans Bay Country Area Project use the Internet to gather information in a structured way.
