Multiplication Square

  • Software: ClarisWorks/AppleWorks
  • Have each child open a spreadsheet document.
  • Highlight cells A1 to M13.
  • Select Column Width from the Format menu and type 40 and click OK.
  • Select Row Height from the Format menu and type 24 and click OK.
  • Select Borders from the Format menu and click in each box and click OK.
  • While all the cells are highlighted select a font and size eg 14 pt NSW Cursive.
  • Click in cell A1 and type X. Note that the typing only appears in the entry box above the cells. Press the Tab key. The X appears in cell A1 and the cursor moves across to cell B2. Type numbers 1 to 12 pressing Tab after each number.
  • Click in cell A2 and type 1. Press the Return key and the number will appear in cell A2 and the cursor will move down to cell A3. Continue typing the numbers, pressing Return after each number.
  • Have students enter the answers to a known table eg 1X, in the appropriate cells across the row and down the column. Highlight the answers entered and change the text colour.
  • As each table is introduced have students enter the answers to the cells. Only change the colour of new table facts and only when the table is known.
