Vehicle Body Maker

Also known as vehicle body builder, automotive body maker, motor body builder and even as auto engineering tradesperson.

Vehicle body builders manufacture and repair vehicle bodys that are not produced in large numbers on a production line, or they modify production vehicles to produce special vehicles, such as ambulances and hearses.

Their duties may include;

constructing a framework from metal, fiberglass or other material, using welding and cutting equipment.

Making panels to cover the framework, by cutting panels of sheet metal, fiberglass, aluminium or other materials.

Fit axles, suspensions, brakes and other related hardware

Design and fit mechanised equipment such as winches and hoists to various types of chassis

Design and carry out chassis alterations, or otherwise change a vehicles structure in consultation with engineers.

Personal requirements

  1. Physical stamina
  2. Manual dexterity
  3. Ability to read engineering drawings

Education and training

Entry requires a 4 year apprenticeship as well as a trade certificate
