The job of an auto body repairer (also known as panel beater) is basically to repair the damage to metal, plastic and fiberglass bodywork on cars. This also extends to making and forming vehicle panels with hand tools or machines.
The duties that a panel beater perform are many and diverse, and can include;
- Removing damaged panels and parts.
- this can include unbolting them or cutting them away
- Removing dents in existing panels
- this involves the use of special hammers and mallets
- Straighten badly dammaged vehicles
- hydrolic equipment is used to achieve door bonnet and boot clearence
- Fit required panels on cars
- this also includes refitting hardware like door locks
- Fill depressions in panels
- fiberglass or plastic fillers are used
- Use special power tools to finish a panel
- sand paper, files and grinders are also used
- Realign chassis and body frames
- using chassis alignment machines and jigging systems
- Assist car body builders
- this includes the building of custom designed, speciality or vintage vehicles.
Other tasks can include cutting and welding panels, replacing and refiting hardware such as locks and trims, assist in the spray painting of vehicles.
