An Interview with Winifred L. 

The person we interviewed was Winifred L. She was born in 1919 and, she is 78  years old. Winifred has been in the Parish for 35 years. 
Winifred lives in just 2 streets away from St Thomas More's. Winifred has lived in the area for 35 years. When she came here there was no sewerage, no proper roads    ( just mud roads). Before St Thomas More's was built there was a paddock with 2 houses and some fields. Winifred never had a farm. All she had was a little house. She never locked her house in  those days, she left it all open. 
Before St Thomas More's was here, there were  paddocks with two houses and some fields. Winifred came from England and then lived in Essendon for 2 years. Then she moved to Hadfield. Her favourite hobbies were swimming and running. She got to the city by car or walked down to Middle St and caught a bus  and then a train. Winifred said the neighbourhood has changed a lot. She thinks the milk bar in North St was the first shop there.

An Interview with Aileen Q. 

Aileen is a senior citizen of Hadfield. She remembers that she use to play basketball and skipping when she was a girl at school. 

Aileen has never been overseas. She use to work as a shop assistant at a cake shop. Society has changed from when she was a child to now. When Aileen was a child she was allowed to go safely everywhere but now she had to be very careful. She has five children and their names are Kristin, Amy, Terry, Paul and Michael. She also has thirteen grandchildren. 

 She enjoys this parish because everyone is nice to her especially Sister Michelle. This is comforting now that her husband is dead. She has got one cousin living near her. 

Aileen's favourite footy team is Carlton because she thinks they play well. Aileen listens to country music.

   An Interview with Hazel. 

The person we interviewed  was Hazel. She has lived in this area for ten years 
Now she lives in Fawkner.  Before St.Thomas More's church was built she prayed at St. Margaret Mary's. When she was a child she passed  her time by playing Telly- ho, Cricket and Rounders.  Her school was different because they just had ordinary  lessons like arithmetic, English and history. 

   In her family there were eleven children and her Father and Mother.  Her nickname was Anne.  Hazel has two girls.  Hazel has been overseas twice ; to Bali and to New Zealand. 

When she was a child they got around by tram, train and by walking. Hazel didn't own a TV or  a Wireless. She prefers the past.

  She looks like her Dad . She lived in a weather board house. Marjorie looks forward to  the future because you don't know what's going to happen, she also enjoys watching her Grandchildren grow. Marjorie's childhood was very happy. She has lived in Hadfield for 36 years.

An Interview with Eleanor.

  Elenor's favourite prayer is 'The Lords Prayer' and one of the night prayers. She prays everyday at church. She started to go to church when she was four years old.

When  she was in grade 4 she used  to  take  first  communion  every  Friday. She  was  upset  when  they  closed  down some of the local State  schools.

An Interview with Margaret W. 

      Mrs Margaret W. was interviewed by Brian and Noura on the 20th of August in St Thomas More's Parish Centre. Margaret told us that her Dad used to fix pipes underground and her Mum did the housework. Margaret was the co-ordinator of parish Catechetics for a number of years, and has helped many children learn more about  God!

An Interview with Mary K. 

Mary King was born in 1934 in Melbourne, Victoria. She did the shopping for her family because she was the oldest child.When she was younger she liked to play rounders and cricket with her brothers and sisters. 

  For 39 years Mary cleaned churches. In the olden days the church observances were a lot stricter . Priests dressed the same and the nuns wore habits. On Fridays they were not allowed to eat meat. Mary played basketball for St. Olivers.  She played in the centre. Mary said that the Casino is a big building and a waste of money and she has not been yet. Mary said that she feels more comfortable in the present because the past has gone.

  Beth,  you had 2 girls and 2 boys. Tell me about your childhood. I have 2 sisters & 2 brothers.Where were you born? I was born in Melbourne. What type of music did you listen to back then? Elvis. Did you have T.V? Not until 1960 .Did you have to lock your house? Yes. How did S.T.M. become a Parish? We all put money in to have a church.

An Interview with Elizabeth C. 

We interviewed Elizebeth Kathleen C., who was born on the 30th of August. She was born at Queen Victoria hospital. She said that there was only  female doctors at that hospital, back then. She lived in Brunswick with her parents,now her children live in Brunswick.She has lived in Hadfield for over 30 years. Some of her childhood memories include the following. At Christmas when her family would drive up to Ballarat to cut down a Christmas tree,and her  birthdays when she was able to blow out the candles on the cake. Beth lived in Hadfield even before the church was built. Beth's children attended St. Thomas More Primary when they were  young. 

  Beth told us she had just been overseas to America. She took a helicopter over the Grand Canyon and she went to Disney land, where she went for a ride on a rollercoaster. She had to close her mouth so her false teeth would not fall out. She said that she enjoyed it very much and would like to do it again.

An Interview with Barbara C. 

We interviewed a lady from the Parish and her name was Barbara C. She went to school in England. She was born on the 25th of May in 1927 in Ireland. 
She has three grandchildren and their names are Kane, Che and Ben.  Barbara's mum and dad's names are Margot and Charles. Barbara said that when she was a child she played games like hop scotch, skipping, netball , cricket and basketball. Her favourite food is roast beef. 
  She was not named after anyone but she was named Barbara  because her mother liked that name. Barbara said that our neighbourhood has changed a lot.  The roads used to be dirty and rough and there weren't  many shops. Barbara Clark lived in a two storied house and she said it was very old and it is still standing. 
In 1958 Oxford St had only houses and in Thames St. there were five houses and both roads were unsealed.

An Interview with Thomas P. 

Thomas P. was born on August the 12th in 1914. Thomas P. is 83 years old. He has enjoyed his life so far. It was hard because there was no T.V., no radio or electricity but electricity was brought out in 1929. 

 Thomas was an apprentice. Then he worked in the army. He made guns, tanks, planes and boats. Thomas  went to Yarraville St. and Sunshine school.

 Norma W. is 61 years old. She has one brother, a mum,  a dad, 5 children and 9  grand children. Norma's hobbies  are sewing, reading and watching T.V. Her favourite A.F.L team is Nth Melbourne.  She  was  two when her brother was born. When she was three she remembers playing with her  cousins and her  brothers  and sisters.

An Interview with Lena. 

 Robert and Adriano interviewed Lena. Lena didn't get up to much   in her childhood days because she  had to help her mum after her  father died.  Lena didn't get up to lots of mischief just smoking paper cigarettes, but apart from that she was a good girl. Lena played the piano, then she quit. Now she regrets it. She is Autralian with an Italian background. There are five  people in her family not including  her father because he has passed away. She is the second oldest  in the family. Lena has lived in Hadfield for forty years. Lena has three children.They are Angela, John and Loretta. Lena likes Hadfield because it's her home town.

An Interview with Betty R. 

  Betty R. was born in Port Melbourne in 1927. She finished school in Frankston and then   worked as a secretary. Betty got married and  had children.  Betty's mum is Australian and her dad is English.  Her Grandparent's are English  too. She said before there were no roads only mud and padocks  in her area.Betty said there were only  markets where she lived.  Before St. Thomas More's was built a football team played on our paddocks and before the Church was built it  was just a small shed. Betty's dad worked in the navy for 33 years and her  mum was a house wife.

Maureen C.  was  born  in  the  year  1929 and  now  (in 1998) she is 73 years  old. She  was married  in  1962  to  Phillip  C. She  has  3   kids   their  names  are  Elizabeth,  Justin  and   Damian. Maureen  went  to  a Primary  School  in  the  country for  8  years.  Then  she  went  to  a Boarding  School. Maureen  is  Australian.  She  is  the Secretary to  the  Wednesday Social  Club  at  St Thomas More's  Parish.  She  has  been  a Grandmother  for 12  years.

An Interview with Judy D. 

  The person we interviewed was Judy D. She told us she had a comfortable childhood and had lots of fun at home. Judy has one brother, she enjoyed playing the ordinary games like Hide & Seek or Chasie. The other thing she liked doing was swimming in the lake on hot days. The happiest moment of Judy's life was when she got married and had 2 kids named Glenn and Judy. 
  Judy's son Glenn still lives at home with her but her daughter lives in Sunbury with her 3 children. Judy liked it when she was a child and and didn't have to worry about being robbed or anyone coming into her house an harming someone. Judy had a difficult job being a hairdressers apprentice and she got paid 1 pound which is $2 today. Judy's mum was a piano teacher she taught other people how to play the piano. 
  Judy told us that they used to gather in the old rooms next to our school and have mass   because there were no churches around. When Judy was young she liked to listen to olden day music, she told us it was music none of us would like. Judy told us that Elvis Presley wasn't around until she was a teenager.

An Interview with Lina. 

Lina was married in 1950 at St. Ignatius. She has 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy. Their names Allegra, Laura and John. She went to school at St. Ignatius Girl's School in Richmond. As a child Lina didn't play any sports. Her family usually bought their food supplies from Safeway which was around back then. 
  Lina has lived in Australia for 69 years and has spent 43 years in Hadfield. The biggest change Lina has noticed is that there are more houses everywhere and there are more  shops. 
Lina enjoys living in Australia very much.

An Interview with Lillian E. 

The person whom we interviewed was Lillian E.She was born in 1928 and she is 67.Lillian lived in  Geelong West, and got married in February 1940.She went to St Patricks school in Geelong.She was taught by  the sisters of the Parish so the children had to be good!!! 
Lillian's favourite memory is of her mother. Lillian moved to Hadfield and has lived here for 41 years.There were not a lot of houses in Hadfield nor people. Lillian said "In our days we wore just plain clothes not like the clothes we wear today. "Lillian likes St Thomas More's Church because it is modern and lovely inside. 
She worked in a stocking factory as her occupation. She had a child and named her Maureen. Lillian came from a family of four children including herself.

  The  person  that  I  interviewed   was   Eileen. Eileen  has  lived  30  years  in  Hadfield. She  was born  in  the  city  of  Melbourne.When  she  was young  she  liked  tea  sets  and  dolls. Now her  favourite T.V  show  is  Burke's  Backyard. Eileen   works as  a legal  Secretary.She  has  three boys   their ages  range  from  10 to 16. Eileen's parents  are  Publicans. I  asked  Eileen  how  did  S.T.M become a parish.  She  said it  broke away  from Corpus  Christi  when many  houses were  built.

An Interview with Ruth H. 

Ruth H was born on the tenth of April in 1926 in Western Australia. She's seventy-one. She has four brothers and four sisters. She's the oldest. Ruth's nationality is Australian. When Ruth went to school she had to walk an extremely long way everyday. In the third grade she got a slap across her hand because she couldn't draw a straight line. Also when she was in the third grade she had a teacher called Mrs B., but all her friends and herself used to call her Fatty B. Everyday after school Ruth, her sisters and her brothers  used to eat everything her mum had made, such as fish, stew and soup.When Ruth was bored she used to knit, complete her chores and play jacks with sheep's knuckles. Ruth said " There were hardly any games" . Ruth had a lot of chores like feeding the animals on their farm. She didn't get a lot of money for it because she had to share it with her sisters and her brothers. Ruth said "My chores were very dull and boring."Ruth wasn't a Catholic, but they still went to Mass. At 9:00am the kids would go to Sunday school and then the whole family would go to Mass at 11:00am.When she was fourteen she left school. Her dad and the family had a water hole and she needed a lot of water. Because there were so much water a tiger snake came along. Her dad got a stick and killed the tiger snake. This happened during the war years. Ruth said, "It was very scary in the world wars." Ruth got married to man named David H. in 1989. After a while, they moved to Melbourne. Ruth did not have any kids. Just twelve months ago, David H. died. She says 
"I used to live in a bush and now its a city". Her favourite football team is the Essendon, Bombers!!!!!!!

An Interview with Stanley. 

When he was at school  he got caned for being late  six times but there was  no strap.  When he got home from  school his dad used to tell him to do his homework. He  also did  gardening and  washing up after tea. Some weeks he would go to his Grandmothers for the week and go to the Village school.On the weekend he would  play Soccer and Cricket. Stanley wasn't old enough to go to War but he worked in a factory.

An Interview with Sue T. 

This  is  the  life  story  of  Sue  T. She  is  seventy-seven  years  old.In  Sue's family  there  are  eight children. Sue  is the second  youngest. Sue  went  to  school  in  Holland.  Every day  Sue  had  to  walk  very  far.  If  you  got  to school  early  you would get points  in  your  report. Sue  had very strict teachers.  If children were  naughty  or  cheeky  they  would 
get  the  cane.  At  lunchtime  you  had  to walk  home  from  school  and  at  afterwards you  had  to  walk  back  to  school. 
  When  Sue  was  fifteen  years  old  she  became  a  dress  maker.   She  has  not lived  in  Broadmeadows  all  her  life.  Sue  regrets coming  to  Australia  when  she  was  young  because  she  would  have  liked  to  have  come  to  Australia  when she  was  older.   We  liked interviewing  Sue.  She  was  great!
