Sydney's Olympic Village at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, will be providing the accomodation for athletes and officals. The village will be within a few minutes of the venues for 14 sports. It is 16km (24 minutes) from the city centre with connections by rail,road and ferry.

The venues for all the 28 sports will be within 20minute travel from the Village and all trainging facilities will be located within Sydney Olympic Park.

Key characteristics of the proposal are:

  • For the first time in Olympic history, all participants will be housed in a single village.

  • It will be a model for future urban consolidation in Sydney, comprised primarily of low rise medium density housing and incorporating major environmental design feature.

  • The development will cover about 100 hectares and over 50% of the site will be retained as parkland and recreational space.
    The Village will provide safe(secured), comfortable and convenient accomodation and related services for athletes and team officials from up to 200 participating delegations.

    During the Olympic Games, the Village will be divided into two zones; the international sector and the residential sector.

    A full range of services will be provided including:

  • reception and accreditation

  • information

  • dining

  • shopping

  • leisure and entertainment

  • religous observance

  • media centre

  • village administraion

    The Village will incorporate a comprehensive range of relaxation and training facilities inluding:

  • athletics field

  • gymnasium with sauna and spa

  • swimming pool

  • basketball, volleyball and tennis courts

  • jogging and cycle tracks

    RESIDENTIAL SECTOR

    Dwellings built for the post-games housing will be provided will be provided with a special Olympic fitout for the period of the Games, with appropriate provisions for taller athletes and higher than normal occupancy. NOC offices, communual facilities and storage will be distributed throughout the Village adjacent to living quaters. A polyclinic will provide a full range of health care services.
    Generally, athletes will be accomodates two per room with appropriate provisions for taller athletes. Dwellings will be furnished to provide serviced apartment accomodation with self-contained facilities, regular cleaning and linen exchange.

    TRANSPORT

    A quiet non-polluting internal transport shuttle will provide access to all areas of the Village at all hours. Transport to competion and training venues will operate from the bus terminal in the International Sector.

    DEVOLPMENT

    The Village will be devoled and financed by private enterprise as a commercially viable residential project. The Olympic Coordination Authority (OCA) will manage the private enterprise process.

    POST-GAMES USE

    Immediatley after the Olympic Games the Village will be adapted as approprate to house 6000 participants for the Paralympic Games.

    Subsedquently, the dwellings will be renovated for rental and sale to meet Sydney's housing demand. The international Sector will become the core of a community center with shops, employment and a primary schol.

    DESIGN

    The successful private sector devolpers will be responible for plaaning and design of the village to ensure full cmpliance with the Olympic requirements and adherence to stringent environmental design guidlines adopted as part of Sydney's Bid.
