One year Australia went over to England and beat them in most games! One person burnt some bails and put them in a urn and it became a yearly match between the two countries.

Queensland got their 2nd Sheild with a win in the final at the WACA. The successful season resulted from an exellent team effort with good contributions by the pace bowlers and different batsmen producing scores at important times. Stuart Law has the satisfaction of Leading Queensland to 2 Shield victories.
Western Australia have been a consistently good side since Tom Moody took over the captaincy. However, they have been runners up the last 2 sheild seasons, when they narrowly failed to finish off South Australia and then lost at home to Queensland. Nevertheless, they did claim the Mercantile Mutual Cup after beating Queensland in the final.
Under the captiancy of Greg Matthews N.S.W inproved after a couple of lean years. However the batting was inconsistent and there were to many collapses to alow a callenge for the Sheild. The young batsmen need to stand up and be counted if N.S.W are going to get back up to the top.
Under David Boon's captaincy Tasmainia remain a difficult side to beat, strong in batting, but with insufficient bowling power to force enough outright victories. They Badly need a fast bowler and a good wrist spinner to become a real force.
Victoria showed some inprovment in a couple of spectacular chases against rivals N.S.W to win one and a very close incounter. They are very strong in pace bowling, especially if Brad Williams is fit for a full season, but the batting lacks consistency and they won't be serious callengers until this problem is overcome.
After a couple of good years when they won the sheild and played off in a final, South Australia experienced a slump in fortunes. The retirement of senior players Paul Nobes and Tim May, plus fast bowling injuries and Jason Gillespie's elevation to the Australian side proved a drain on resources.
