In August each year, the main Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition for Queensland is held in the city of Brisbane, the State Capital City. This event is affectionately known as the "Ekka"; or more correctly, the Royal Queensland Show.

A group of 22 school students aged 11 and 12 are invited each year to "live-in" at the Show to become involved in special educational activities and discover and enjoy the experiences of the Show.
The Camp aims to:-

· Bring together selected students with similar abilities and interests from the whole of Queensland,

- to develop friendships,

- to gain a greater appreciation of the way of life and experiences of other children from throughout the state, and

- to work cooperatively on literacy projects.

· Develop skills (eg. researching, interviewing, writing, editing, technology use) which will enhance their ability to communicate through a variety of genres within the setting and experiences of the Brisbane Exhibition.

· Enable students to gain a greater appreciation of the importance of the Exhibition to the rural community of the State.

· Provide an opportunity for students to gain first-hand experiences with the handling and judging of show livestock.

While at the Show the students will be researching and producing news stories and special reports on the activities of the Show and publishing their stories in the Ekka Courier On-Line.

The newspaper name combines the coloquial expression for the Royal Queensland Show - the EKKA -with the name of the original newspaper produced in Brisbane - the Moreton Bay Courier.
