These are the animals of the desert

The Bearded Dragon

The bearded dragon is a large lizard of the Australian desert. Many lizards are found in deserts. They are the most successful animal group to adapt to the dry, desert conditions.

The Kangaroo Rat

They dig burrows and sleep during the day . They cover their holes up to trap moisture in their breathing . They don't drink water . They make water from dry seeds.

The Frilled Dragon

The Frilled dragon is one of the most spectacular dragons in the world and the only one that has a frill. The frill is constructed like an umbrella. It has bones attached to the neck and opens by pressure from the neck muscles. The bones stand up and so the whole frill opens like an umbrella. When pressure on the neck is relaxed, the frill folds down. They use their frill to frighten away animals.

A Frilled dragon (also called the Frill-Necked lizard) runs up on its hind legs with its frill up to scare away predators. It runs on its claws to stop it from burning its pads on the hot sand.

Corey's Pop was bitten by one of these fierce creatures and had his leg amputated when it turned into gangrene.

The Camel

There are many ways the camel survives in the desert

A Camel Can Go without water for up to two weeks,

And Then...

Drink 100 litres in just a few minutes!

The Thorny Devil

Thorny devils live in desert regions of South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory. The Thorny Devil grows to about 15 cm. It's also covered by sharp spikes.

The thorny devil eats some species of ants. It uses its long sticky tongue to catch them.

The Thorny Devil is one of the slowest reptiles. It could take an hour to move only a few metres. It lives in burrows or holes under rocks and lumps of grass.
