PHILIP AND THE ABORIGINES

1788

Philip wanted aborigines to become British. He didn't worry about taking their land. He wanted to "reconcile them to live amongst us". Phillip kidnapped three aborigines to teach them English-one died, one escaped and the third one was called Bennelong, who became Phillip's helper. Bennelong went to England with Phillip. Some aborigines tried to make friends with the white people.

 

BENNELONG

He tried to make his life being friends with the white people. In 1792 Bennelong went to Britain with Phillip. He was the first aborigine to go overseas.

Rock paintings and engravings are found at aborigine sites throughout Australia.

 

ARABANOO

The Governor Phillip forced Arabanoo to live with him in the first British settlement. After six months Arabanoo died of small pox. Phillip captured two more aborigines to replace Arabanoo. Their names were Colbee and Bennelong.

Some aborigines fought the white people.

 

 

PEMULWAY

Pemulway was a powerful guerilla leader thought to be an outlaw, he was linked to the death of McIntyre, one of Governor Phillip's Servants. Pemulway died in 1802 by gunshots.

 

THE ABORIGINAL FLAG

In 1972 an Aboriginal artist, Harold Thomas and some people designed the Aboriginal flag. Black at the top stands for the people, red at the bottom stands for the land and yellow in the middle stands for the sun. The flag represents how aborigines feel about the land. It was first flown in Canberra when the land rights campaign started.

 

 

 

CHANGES

Lots of changes have happened over the past 200 years to aboriginal culture.

  1. Aboriginal people were allowed to vote in 1967, about 100 years later than white people!!
  2. The Aboriginal Land Rights Act (1976) gave land back to the aborigines.

ABORIGINAL SPORTING HEROES

Many aborigines have become famous sports people eg:

There are also famous aborigine writers like Oodgeroo and Burnum . Others are famous artists like Albert Namatijira

 

 

 

ABORIGINES IN THE WARS

Thousands of aboriginals were involved in world war one and two. During the second world war young aboriginal men from all areas of Australia enlisted. Overall, several thousand aboriginals served in various parts of the Army, Navy and Airforce. One of the aborigines who was in the army was Reg Saunders. He was the first aboriginal to be an officer on the army. He fought in World War 2 and the Korean war. His photo is in The Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

NEVILLE BONNER

Neville Bonner was the first aboriginal representative in the Commonwealth Parliament. Neville Bonner is a self-taught man and only had one year at school at the age of 13. He has co-written several books and is an executive with the ABC. He has helped change feelings about aborigines in Australia.

 

 

 

CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINES

Today, some aboriginals choose to live in semi-tribal areas of Northern and Central Australia. Others choose to work and live in cities. Others live in aboriginal communities in independent of the white community. However, they are loyal to each other and to the cause of them being accepted as Australians.
