THE FIRST FLEET

The First Fleet were the first people to bring convicts to Australia.

They had to bring food like beer, breads, dried peas, cheese, casks of water, beef and pork, medicines, bandages, surgical instruments, handcuffs, leg irons, chains, 5 000 bricks, a prefabricated house for the governor and a weaving loom. They also had to take tools like farming tools and hammers.

There were 11 ships in the First Fleet .

They brought more than 1487 people:

When Phillip landed at Botany Bay, he thought it was not as he suspected it to be. Here some reasons why.

  1. The water was too shallow, so the ship had to stay in deep water and winds threatened to damage the Sirius.

  2. The soil was too soggy and sandy to grow crops

  3. It was a hassle to bring supplies from the ship.

Three days after arriving, Philip moved further north shore to one of the many coves of Port Jackson. He decided to settle here and make a new colony. On the 26 th of January he started to settle and other supply ships and transport ships came. This day is called

Australia Day !!

THE SECOND FLEET

The first settlers had run out of food, so they were angry to hear that. The Second Fleet were bringing 1000 more convicts. They needed people with skills, e.g. farming.

Luckily the ship called "The Supply" bought more food just before they starved.

The "Lady Juliana" bought 222 female convicts which made everybody happy.
