Charles Sturt

Charles Sturt believed that the continent held an inland sea.In 1844 Sturt set out to search for the inland sea with fifteen men, thirty bullocks, eleven horses and sheep to provide food.

Months of travelling brought him to Mount Poole which Sturt named after his second command James Poole. Summer came and the party was forced under shelter. There was a good supply of water. Five months they waited for rain. During the wait James Poole suffered from scurvy. He died while being sent back for treatment.

In 1845 the party travelled again. The party headed north-west and found it harsh and dry, consisting largely of sand ridges. He named it Stony Desert.
